Planning for Spring
March is typically the first month we in the Midwest start to get excited about the upcoming warmer months: baseball, camping, cookouts, and more summer fun are just around the corner! But before you can enjoy the outside areas of your home this season, there are a few things we recommend getting in order to get the most out of your entertaining spaces. Here are three simple steps you can take as a homeowner to get the exterior of your home ready to go for the spring, summer, and fall months this year.
One tip to keep in mind with these steps: be sure to do them in order to not only save yourself time, money, and frustration, but to obtain the best end result possible lasting you the entire year.
Step One: Clean the Exterior of Your Home
If you think of your home as creating a piece of artwork, the first step you will want to take is starting with a nice, clean canvas. The fall and winter months can be especially harsh on our homes. In Autumn, we’re dealing with fluctuating temperatures, freezing and unfreezing moisture in your walkways, siding, gutters and roof. You also have to navigate debris like leaves, loose branches, and dirt from increased winds. In winter, the moisture and temperature shifts continue, along with the added weight to driveways, roofs and gutters from snow and ice buildup.
In addition to the wear and tear from these outdoor elements, the colder months are also when mold and mildew will hide away. So even if you don’t see any mold or mildew growing actively on your home at this time, it doesn’t mean it isn’t there, since many molds simply go dormant during the colder months and then return in full force after the last frost.
As we move further into spring, you may start to notice moss or mold growing on the side of your home. Mold spores don’t typically release until the summer or fall months, so if you have the chance in early spring to get your siding or roof deep-cleaned, you may be able to combat your family’s possible allergic reactions to any mold releasing into the air while you’re trying to enjoy your property in August and September.
In addition to the health and safety benefits of cleaning your home’s exterior, it also helps to save the integrity of your siding and roofing. If you can cut out any growth while it is still surface-level, you may save yourself the headache down the road of it growing into the interior structure of your home.
Finally, we recommend cleaning your house’s walls and roof first to ensure you create the perfect environment for any other upgrades you want to make this year, like an epoxy floor installation, exterior house painting, or landscaping.
While our team is known for how well we keep our work environment clean and tidy, there will be some inevitable mess created by soft washing the exterior walls of your home or your roof. The chemicals used for these services are safe for plants and animals to interact with. But we want to be sure that your home can put its best foot forward throughout the outdoor entertaining months.
To ensure the extended life of your landscaping like fresh plantings and mulch, we recommend getting our team in and out first.
Step Two: Seal Your Concrete and Install Epoxy Flooring
After your home and the surrounding walking surfaces like driveways and sidewalks are squeaky clean, this is the perfect time to protect and extend the life of your concrete surfaces by having them professionally sealed.
Sealing your concrete surfaces has two main benefits: protection & visual enhancement. When you seal your concrete, you’re ensuring that the daily wear and tear that your concrete floors experience doesn’t structurally damage the surface over time. Additionally, if you have specialty concrete pavers that have a certain design or color, sealing them regularly will enhance the color and extend their lifetime.
Depending on your type of concrete, you may be able to complete your process after a proper and regular cleaning and sealing. But for some concrete surfaces, especially garages, patios, and front entryways, you will want to consider an epoxy flooring to extend your concrete surfaces’ integrity for a lifetime.
Particularly for your garage, installing an epoxy floor will make summer messes from kids’ muddy shoes, a leaky mower or car, and summer projects a breeze to clean up. Epoxy floors are also an excellent way to protect and extend the life of your concrete floor from damage caused by moisture and other debris, and it can increase the value of your home.
Step Three: Exterior Painting & Landscaping
Now that you’ve created a clean and protected surface for your home, this is the perfect time to call your exterior painter and landscaper to complete the look. Here is a list of a few local exterior painters and landscapers that we recommend giving a call:
Landscaping: Thomas Lawn & Landscape
Painting: Moli Painting
